Welsh slate benefits from a number of highly practical properties that make it an exceptional roofing slate. It is the most durable slate in the world with a useful and productive life of more than 100 years guaranteed. It is waterproof and unaffected by normal extremes of temperature, highly resistant to acids, alkalis and other chemicals and it is colourfast and nonfading, even in UV light. There are five colours that naturally arise from the quarries of Welsh Slate. Roofing slate is available in three of these Penrhyn Heather Blue, Penrhyn Heather Red and Cwty Bugail Dark Blue Grey, whereas architectural products are available in four all of the above plus Penrhyn Heather Grey. Natural aggregate colours are classified as Plum (Penrhyn Heather Red), Blue (Penrhyn Heather Blue) and Green.
